Immigration levels are rising, with an admission target for 2021 of 350,000 immigrants. New contribution agreements designed to facilitate the settlement and integration of immigrants in Canada are in progress. At the same time, there is some evidence that attitudes toward immigrants and refugees among established Canadians are hardening, with populism on the rise. In this time of uncertainty and possible change, it seems useful to consider how we can renew our support for immigration to Canada, which is essential for the future of our country. This conference looks ahead, focusing on how research, policy, and practice supporting the attraction, settlement and integration of newcomers can continue to make important contributions to the well-being of Canada and those who live here, whether established Canadians or newcomers. The conference includes plenary sessions, workshops, a poster session, and opportunities to network with colleagues. More than 500 attendees are expected to participate.\r\n\r\nOn Wednesday, October 30, we will also be hosting a full-day Preconference for Local Immigration Partnerships and R\u00e9seaux en immigration francophone.\u00a0Additionally, on Wednesday, October 30, the Intercultural Competency\u00a0Advantage Program (ICAP) will be conducting an evening workshop on Effective Intercultural Communication (for more information, click here<\/a>).\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_23160\" align=\"alignleft\" width=\"180\"]\"Kamal<\/a> Kamal Al-Solaylee
Photo Credit: Gary Gould[\/caption]\r\n\r\nWe are pleased to announce that the keynote speaker at this year\u2019s conference is Kamal Al-Solaylee, author of Brown: What Being Brown in the World Today Means (to Everyone)<\/em>. The book was a finalist for the Governor General Literary Awards and Trillium Book Award, and won the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing in 2017. Brown was a Best Book of 2016 selection for the Globe and Mail, CBC Books, the National Post, The Walrus, Toronto Life and Chatelaine. Al-Solaylee is also bestselling author of Intolerable: A Memoir of Extremes<\/em>, shortlisted for the CBC\u2019s Canada Reads, the Writers\u2019 Trust Hilary Weston Prize for Nonfiction and the 2013 winner of the Toronto Book Award. In 2018 he was chair of the Scotiabank Giller Prize jury, and earlier this year he won the Gold Medal at the National Magazine Awards for best column. Based in Toronto, he was previously the national theatre critic at the Globe and Mail and over the last two decades has written on books, the performing arts, immigration, race and politics for The Walrus, the Toronto Star, Literary Review of Canada, the National Post, Quill & Quire, Elle Canada, Canadian Notes & Queries, Chatelaine and Maclean\u2019s. He holds a PhD in Victorian fiction, which remains one of his passions. P2P Preconference
\r\nLocal Immigration Partnerships and R\u00e9seaux en immigration francophone: The Nexus of Newcomer Settlement and Integration<\/span><\/h4>\r\nPathways to Prosperity will hold a Preconference of Local Immigration Partnerships (LIPs) and R\u00e9seaux en immigration francophone (RIFs) on Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel in Toronto. The Preconference brings together the RIFs and LIPs to discuss common challenges, share achievements, and learn from each other. It is led and organized by the LIPs and RIFs, with logistical support from Pathways to Prosperity. More than 150 representatives from the LIPs and RIFs and other organizations are expected to attend.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n
